Setting

Mathematics is taught in sets from Years 7 to 11. Pupils are set into two bands with six classes in each band. Pupils are set challenging targets for SATs and GCSE from Y7 based on prior achievement data and their progress is monitored closely. Setting is flexible and changes are made each term based on test results and teacher recommendations.

Teaching and Learning

At Key Stage 3 there is strong emphasis on the use of the National Numeracy Strategy and the incorporation of 3 part lessons.

At Key Stage 4 all pupils follow the 2-tier AQA Specification B (Modular). Pupils are either entered for Higher Tier (grades A* - D) or Foundation Tier (grades C - G) depending on their performance in lessons/tests and their target grade.

Current Y11 follow the 2-tier specification with coursework (4302). Pupils have already completed modules 1 - 3 worth, 40% of their GCSE and will complete the following modules in Y11:

       Module 4            Number Grids Coursework          10% of GCSE              January 2008
       Module 5            Algebra/Shape Exams                  50% of GCSE              June 2008

Current Y10 follow the new 2-tier specification without coursework (4307). Pupils will complete the following modules:

       Module 1            Handling Data Exam                     18% of GCSE               November 2007
       Module 3            Number Exam                              27% of GCSE               March/June 2008
       Module 5            Algebra/Shape Exams                  55% of GCSE               June 2009

Each exam consists of 2 sections: a calculator section and a non-calculator section.

Pupils may re sit modules 1 and 3 once at a cost of £5 and the better mark stands.

At Key Stage 5 the faculty runs AS/A2 level modular courses in Maths and Further Maths (EDEXCEL) in addition to GCSE re sit courses.

The faculty has high expectations of all our pupils and our teaching style encourages pupils to take an active part in Maths lessons. Pupils are encouraged to think about Mathematics and its applications rather than solely practising skills.

Specialist Status

From September 2006 the Maths faculty will benefit from the following opportunities funded by the second specialism 'Science with Maths':

• ·One member of the Maths Faculty will spend a morning each week working with the main feeder primary schools. The aim is to stretch the more able pupils and improve transition/ provide enrichment activities for all pupils.

• · Maths classrooms on the Upper site have been refurbished to include an interactive whiteboard and a suite of computers in each classroom.
